The Röhrl/Geistdörfer works car that won the 1980 Sanremo — and clinched the title.

Chassis 0388232 is one of the most significant Fiat 131 Abarths in existence: the Group 4 works car in which Walter Röhrl and Christian Geistdörfer won the 1980 Rallye Sanremo — the victory that sealed Röhrl’s World Drivers’ Championship and Fiat’s final WRC Constructors’ title. During the Mirafiori factory strike the car was quietly taken from the works at night and run by Jolly Club in plain white, stripped of all sponsor livery; on asphalt-only short-travel suspension, Röhrl still beat Ari Vatanen’s Ford Escort by 36 seconds.

Its Lampredi-designed 1,995 cc twin-cam carries an alloy 16-valve head and Kugelfischer mechanical injection for roughly 240 bhp, with independent rear suspension, a lightweight panel set (fibreglass bonnet, aluminium doors) and the widened Abarth bodywork. The car is Abarth Classiche certified (2016), holds an FIA Historic Technical Passport, and was given a complete mechanical rebuild in 2018. It is presented today in its Sanremo “no-livery” white and remains eligible for the world’s premier historic rallies under FIA Appendix K. It was acquired at Broad Arrow’s Monterey sale in August 2025.
